How to move WhatsApp to a new phone: Transferring backups & restoring

When you obtain a new smartphone and instal WhatsApp, your old chats and groups are not instantly imported. However, with a few simple steps, you can ensure that all of your messages, photographs, and files are correctly transferred to the new device. Even if you switch from an iPhone to an Android phone.

1. Backup and restore from Google Drive

For automatic backups, WhatsApp on Android cellphones uses Google Drive. These are linked to the phone number and Google account on which they were created, so keep these facts in mind. The feature makes it simple to move chats, but some steps need to be taken to avoid message loss.

Backups may be turned off or set to a weekly or monthly basis, depending on the current settings, leaving an outdated conversation history in Google Drive. To ensure that your new phone has all of your recent texts, perform a manually backup:

  • Tap the three dots button on WhatsApp's main screen.
  • Choose Settings.
  • Select Chats.
  • Navigate to Chat backup.
  • Back up by using the BACK UP button.

Important: If your movies are not backed up using other programmes (such as Google Photographs), make sure to click Include Videos first; otherwise, the backup will only contain texts and photos.
You can begin configuring the new phone now that all of your messages from the old phone have been saved to Google Drive. But first, remember to register the new device with the same phone number/SIM card and Google Account. To avoid surprises, we recommend connecting to a Wi-Fi access point rather than mobile data.

When you first launch WhatsApp on your new smartphone, the app will ask if you want to restore the messages and media stored in your Google account. When you confirm, all messages and other files will begin downloading in the background. It may take some time depending on the number of documents.

2. Apple iCloud backup on iPhones

The backup process is similar for iPhone users; the only difference is that your chats are saved to your iCloud account online storage rather than Google Drive.

  • Select Settings.

  • Choose Chats.

  • Navigate to Chat Backup.

  • Check the Include Videos box, then click Back Up Then.

Remember to use the same Apple ID from the prior phone, to have iCloud Drive turned on, and to use the same phone number as before when setting up your new iPhone. During the first run, WhatsApp should ask if you wish to restore the messages and media stored in the backup. Confirm, and then wait for your data to instantly sync.

3. Manually backing up and restoring conversations

You can manually backup your WhatsApp chat history if you prefer to do things the old-fashioned way and have an Android phone. Simply repeat the procedures for making a backup copy. The identical file that you upload to Google Drive is also stored to your smartphone's internal memory.

  • Open the file manager on your previous phone.
  • Navigate to the WhatsApp folder.
  • It might be stored to a directory such as Internal storage > Android > media > com.whatsapp.
  • Navigate to the Databases subdirectory.
  • Choose the most recent file, which is normally titled "msgstore.db.crypt[number]".
  • Copy the file to a cloud storage provider or email using the device's Share function.
  • Create a WhatsApp > Databases folder on the new phone's internal storage.
  • Transfer the file to the new folder.

You may use a PC to copy the backup files and transfer them to the new phone, and the same processes will also let you store a backup to the computer.

  • Connect your smartphone to your computer with a USB cord.

  • Launch the PC file manager and navigate to the WhatsApp > Databases folder on the phone's internal memory.

  • Copy the file with the most recent creation date to your computer.

  • Install WhatsApp on the new phone, but do not launch it!

  • Connect the new phone to the computer via USB.

  • Make a WhatsApp > Databases folder in the new phone's internal storage.

  • Transfer the file to the new folder.

Remember to register the app with the same phone number you used on the old device when you first open WhatsApp on the new phone. After authenticating the number, WhatsApp will look for the local backup and, when requested, hit RESTORE to recover your chats.

4. Moving WhatsApp conversations from iPhone to Android

Google revealed in October 2021 that Android 12 phones may now transfer WhatsApp history from iPhones using simply a Lightning to USB connection — often USB-C on newer Android phones.

Check that WhatsApp is up to date on both devices and that the new phone's app is registered to the same phone number as the previous iPhone.
Because the operation starts during the initial Android configuration, restoring WhatsApp messages to an existing Android installation is not feasible. If the device was already configured, you must reset it to factory conditions.

Connect both phones using the Lightning-USB cord during the Android setup. And then follow the onscreen instructions.

  • When the QR code for transferring WhatsApp chats appears, scan it with the iPhone camera.

  • If the scan fails, launch WhatsApp on your iPhone and navigate to Settings > Chats > Move Chats to Android.

  • Wait for the file transfer to begin by tapping Start on the iPhone.

  • Install and launch WhatsApp after you've finished configuring your new Android phone.

  • Log in with the same phone number as on your iPhone.

  • After WhatsApp recognises your transferred backup, tap Import.

After you join WhatsApp on the new phone, the old phone will no longer receive messages. Remember that only messages and most forms of media are moved to the new device, not payment messages and call history (images, videos, audio messages).
